COURSE CURRICULUM

The Social Service Worker program is spans four semesters, combining hybrid classroom learning with a significant practical placement in the final semester. In the first semester, students build foundational skills through courses like Communications I for Community Development Professionals, Counselling Interventions I, Foundations in Human Services, Mental Health & Recovery, Power, Privilege and Oppression, Across the Lifespan, and Introduction to Indigenous Studies. These courses provide knowledge about human services, social dynamics, and cultural awareness. The second semester focuses on more advanced topics such as Case Management and Service Coordination, Counselling Interventions II, Documentation and Record Keeping in Human Services, Ethics and Professional Practice, Introduction to Social Welfare, Prevention and Health Promotion, and Professional Practice I, all of which emphasize professional skills and ethical practice. Semester three offers in-person learning with courses including Building Capacity in Communities, Counselling Interventions III, Group Theory: Models and Dynamics, Intergenerational Trauma, Older Adults & Their Families, and Professional Practice II, along with a General Education Elective, which can be chosen to meet Indigenous Perspectives designation requirements. The final semester is dedicated entirely to a 525-hour field placement, providing real-world experience and practical application of skills in a community or agency setting. This comprehensive program equips students with the knowledge, skills, and experience necessary for effective social service work and prepares graduates for professional practice and membership with the Ontario College of Social Workers and Social Service Workers.
