COURSE CURRICULUM

The Occupational Therapist Assistant and Physiotherapist Assistant program at Fleming College is a comprehensive four-semester, in-person diploma that prepares students to support registered occupational therapists and physiotherapists in helping clients regain movement, function, and independence. The program begins with foundational courses such as anatomy and physiology, basic clinical skills, and communication strategies tailored for health professionals. Students also explore healthcare systems, human development across the lifespan, and Indigenous studies to build a well-rounded perspective. In the second semester, the curriculum advances with continued anatomy education, clinical pathology, therapeutic exercise, and preparation for field experience. The third semester emphasizes hands-on skill development with courses in essential skills for both occupational and physical therapy assistants, supported by a structured field placement that allows students to apply their knowledge in real healthcare environments. Reflective practice and communication strategies for clients with disorders further enhance their practical capabilities. In the final semester, students complete two extended field placements, gaining over 450 hours of clinical experience. They also engage in clinical case studies and examine selected topics in rehabilitation, which provide opportunities to synthesize theory and practice. The program structure ensures graduates are versatile, capable of working in various healthcare settings, and equipped with the skills to support diverse client populations. With the option to pursue the Indigenous Perspectives Designation by selecting INDG128 as a general education elective, the program also emphasizes cultural competency and inclusivity. Upon graduation, students are prepared to enter a high-demand field and contribute meaningfully to client care and recovery within interprofessional healthcare teams.
