COURSE CURRICULUM

The Mental Health and Addiction Worker program spans four semesters, blending hybrid coursework with a comprehensive field placement to prepare students for careers supporting individuals with mental health and addiction challenges. The first semester introduces foundational topics such as Communications for Community Development Professionals, Counselling Interventions I, Foundations in Human Services, Mental Health and Recovery, Power, Privilege and Oppression, Across the Lifespan, and Indigenous Studies, establishing a broad understanding of mental health within social contexts. In the second semester, students develop practical skills through courses in Case Management and Service Coordination, Counselling Interventions II, Documentation, Ethics, Prevention and Health Promotion, Screening and Assessment, and Substance Use, alongside Professional Practice I. The third semester deepens this knowledge with courses in Building Capacity in Communities, Counselling Interventions III, Family and Social Support, Group Theory, Trauma Specific Treatment Interventions, Concurrent Disorders, and Professional Practice II, including a General Education elective with an option to earn an Indigenous Perspectives Designation. The program culminates in a 525-hour Mental Health and Addictions Field Placement during the fourth semester, coupled with a Psychopharmacology course to enhance understanding of medication in treatment. Together, these components ensure graduates are well-equipped to work effectively and compassionately in diverse mental health and addiction settings.
