COURSE CURRICULUM

The Fitness and Health Promotion program at Fleming College prepares students for careers as fitness and health consultants by combining theoretical knowledge with practical experience. Over four semesters, students develop skills in exercise science, coaching, health promotion, and business to meet the growing demand for qualified fitness professionals. The curriculum begins with foundational courses in leisure, group exercise, health promotion, and human biology, complemented by communication and computer application training. As the program progresses, students delve deeper into coaching and leadership, community health promotion, group fitness instruction, and small business strategies tailored to the wellness industry. Applied learning is emphasized through courses in advanced coaching, biomechanics, nutrition, and exercise prescription. Students also explore how to assess and monitor individual health and fitness levels to design safe, effective, and personalized programs. Technology and digital literacy are integrated throughout the curriculum, preparing students to use tools such as fitness tracking apps and virtual platforms in client engagement. A key component of the program is the field placement, where students gain valuable workplace experience supervised by professionals in diverse settings, including hospitals, corporate wellness programs, fitness centers, physiotherapy clinics, and non-profit health organizations. These placements are customized to align with each student's career aspirations or further academic goals. Faculty members bring extensive industry experience, and small class sizes allow for personalized instruction in state-of-the-art facilities like the Peterborough Sport and Wellness Centre. Graduates are well-prepared to pursue industry certifications and enter the workforce as competent, confident, and adaptable health and fitness professionals.
