COURSE CURRICULUM

The Educational Support diploma program combines hybrid and in-person learning to prepare students for supporting children with special needs in school settings. In the first semester, students study foundational topics including lifespan development, educational support principles, communication skills, technology for human services, Indigenous studies, and psychology. The second semester focuses on curriculum development, an introduction to exceptionalities, classroom technology, and field preparation, with an option to earn an Indigenous Perspectives designation. The third semester offers in-person learning, including advanced communication, extensive field practice, neurodevelopmental disabilities, physical exceptionalities, positive behaviour strategies, and additional field preparation. The final semester is a full-time, 525-hour field placement where students gain practical experience working directly with exceptional children in schools or agencies. This hands-on placement allows students to apply their knowledge in real-world settings, working with children with a range of disabilities such as autism, cognitive and physical impairments, and behavioural challenges. The program’s blend of theory, technology, and extensive fieldwork equips graduates with the skills and experience necessary to effectively support exceptional learners in diverse educational environments.
