COURSE CURRICULUM

The Early Childhood Education diploma program at Fleming prepares students to create enriching, play-based environments for children aged 0 to 12, grounded in Ontario’s Early Learning and Care principles. In the first semester, students build foundational knowledge in child development, pedagogical approaches, social competencies, communication, and Indigenous studies while developing skills for academic success. The second semester focuses on leadership, anti-bias education, children’s health, inquiry-based learning, observation skills, and psychology, with opportunities to explore Indigenous perspectives. The third semester advances learning through courses on inclusive and sustainable environments, child development, family partnerships, and includes a 135-hour field practicum for practical experience. The program culminates in a comprehensive 450-hour placement in the fourth semester, allowing students to apply their knowledge in real-world early childhood settings. Throughout the program, students gain over 525 hours of hands-on experience, emphasizing play, social inclusion, well-being, engagement, and expression, all aligned with Ontario’s pedagogy, How Does Learning Happen? Faculty are dedicated to providing universally designed learning to ensure an inclusive and supportive education, preparing graduates to meet the diverse needs of children and families in their communities.
