COURSE CURRICULUM
The Animal Conservation Biology program offers a comprehensive curriculum designed to equip students with both theoretical knowledge and practical skills essential for conserving animal biodiversity. In the first semester, students build a strong foundation through courses such as Applied Mathematics in Natural Resource Sciences, Ecology and Environment, and Earth and Atmosphere, while developing communication skills tailored to environmental and natural resource fields. They also gain introductory knowledge in conservation biology, field skills, geomatics, and Indigenous studies, which provide important context and technical abilities. The second semester deepens this understanding with specialized courses focused on Animal and Aquatic Biodiversity Conservation, Environmental Chemical Science, and Wildlife Observation Skills. Students also study Trees and Shrubs of Ontario and continue enhancing their communication abilities. A general education elective is included to broaden their academic experience. During the third semester, the focus shifts toward hands-on learning, with Biodiversity Conservation Field and Lab Techniques, Biodiversity of Vertebrates, and participation in a Field Camp that reinforces fieldwork competencies. Students also take courses in Vector GIS, Natural Resources Law, and Statistics, all of which support research and data analysis skills necessary for conservation work. In the final semester, students engage in an Applied Research Project, applying their knowledge to real-world conservation challenges. They study Biodiversity Conservation Management, Aquatic and Terrestrial Ecosystems, and Biodiversity of Invertebrates, gaining expertise in managing diverse species and habitats. Applied Human Relations fosters teamwork and interpersonal skills critical for collaborative work in conservation, while advanced geomatics training further enhances spatial analysis capabilities. Another general education elective ensures a well-rounded education. Overall, the program integrates science, fieldwork, research, and communication, preparing graduates to address the complex issues facing animal conservation today and pursue careers in environmental agencies, research institutions, or community organizations dedicated to protecting biodiversity.
