COURSE CURRICULUM

The Carpentry and Renovation Technician program is a comprehensive four-semester, in-person diploma that prepares students for a dynamic career in construction and renovation through hands-on training and technical instruction. Semester 1 introduces core concepts including safe carpentry practices, blueprint reading, drafting, trade calculations, and essential computer and communication skills tailored to the trades. In Semester 2, students expand on foundational skills with practical experience in residential carpentry, interpreting plans and building codes, sustainable construction practices, and the development of a professional trades portfolio. Semester 3 focuses on advanced carpentry skills including roof framing, interior finishing, and millwork, alongside the application of project management software, welding basics, construction estimating, and deeper engagement with the Ontario Building Code. A general education elective encourages broader learning. Semester 4 emphasizes the integration of all acquired skills through complex projects such as stair and roof construction, finish carpentry, and independent builds. Students also explore entrepreneurship, mechanical systems in buildings (plumbing, HVAC, electrical), advanced drafting and estimating using design software, and sustainable building design aligned with programs like LEED and Energy Star. The program concludes with another general education elective and offers opportunities to earn health and safety certifications. Graduates will be equipped to challenge Level 1 and 2 of the General Carpenter (403A) Apprenticeship and pursue diverse careers in the construction industry.
