COURSE CURRICULUM

The Practical Nursing program at Fleming College spans five semesters and is delivered in a hybrid format combining online and in-person learning. In the first semester, students take courses such as Anatomy and Physiology I, Clinical Nursing Informatics, Communications for Health Professionals, Nursing Skill Labs, Practical Nursing Theory, and complete their first clinical placement. Foundations in math for nursing, health theory, and an introduction to Indigenous studies are also included to provide a well-rounded education. Semester two builds on this foundation with Anatomy and Physiology II, Communications II, Health Assessment, Pharmacology Applications, Nursing Skill Labs, and an extended clinical placement. Students also take general education electives, with options to earn an Indigenous Perspectives Designation by selecting specific courses. The third semester focuses on Nursing Care of Families, advanced Pharmacology Applications, further Nursing Skill Labs, Practical Nursing Theory, Professional Aspects of Nursing, and another clinical placement. Semester four includes Nursing Skill Labs IV, Nursing in the Community, two clinical placements, Practical Nursing Theory IV, and professional nursing topics. The program culminates in the fifth semester with a full-time clinical placement designed to consolidate the skills and knowledge acquired throughout the program. This combination of theory, lab work, and extensive clinical experience ensures students graduate ready to provide safe, competent, and compassionate care. The program is structured to meet the standards required for registration with the College of Nurses of Ontario, enabling graduates to enter the workforce as Registered Practical Nurses and pursue further education if desired.
