COURSE CURRICULUM

The Biotechnology - Advanced program is a comprehensive five-semester Ontario College Advanced Diploma delivered in a hybrid format, culminating in a full-time internship. The curriculum offers a strong foundation in molecular biology, chemistry, forensic DNA analysis, microbiology, molecular biology, physics, and lab mathematics, with more than 250 hours of hands-on lab training in the first four semesters. Students begin by developing fundamental skills in biology, chemistry, computing, scientific communication, and Indigenous studies. The second semester builds on this with advanced topics in organic chemistry, microbiology, data management, and forensic techniques. The third semester introduces modern biotechnology methods such as DNA isolation, sequencing, and PCR in a simulated lab setting, along with courses in molecular biology, laboratory automation, professional practices, and quality assurance. In the fourth semester, students explore analytical chemistry, biochemistry, advanced forensic applications, pharmacology, and lab automation technologies. They also examine ethical and operational standards in labs through quality assurance case studies. Throughout the program, students are encouraged to develop transferable skills in problem-solving, teamwork, communication, and critical thinking. The final semester consists of a 600-hour internship that immerses students in a real-world laboratory environment, allowing them to apply their knowledge and skills, gain experience with professional equipment and protocols, and explore career specializations. Placement sites can be local, regional, national, or international in either public or private sectors. This internship serves as a key bridge between academic training and professional practice, helping students integrate theory with hands-on experience, build networks in the industry, and transition smoothly into the workforce. With a strong combination of theory, practical lab experience, and workplace training, this program equips graduates for diverse careers in biotechnology, including health sciences, forensics, environmental science, and quality assurance across a wide range of scientific industries.
