COURSE CURRICULUM

The Welding Techniques program at Fleming College is a comprehensive, two-semester, in-person program designed to provide students with essential entry-level skills in the welding field. The curriculum is aligned with Level One Apprenticeship requirements for Welding Fabrication, ensuring students receive industry-relevant training. In the first semester, students focus on foundational knowledge, including trade-specific communication and computer skills, health and safety practices, and introductory trade calculations. They are introduced to core welding processes such as Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW I), Semi-Automatic Processes I, and Thermal Processes I, along with training in blueprint reading, drafting, and hand and power tool safety. Semester two builds on this foundation with more advanced techniques including Gas Tungsten Arc Welding (GTAW I), Shielded Metal Arc Welding II, and Semi-Automatic Processes II. Students deepen their understanding of welding through courses like Welding Fundamentals and Applied Blueprint Reading for Welders, while continuing to develop their trade math and professional skills with Trade Calculations I and Skilled Trades Portfolio Development. A General Education elective allows students to broaden their learning experience. This program offers significant hands-on practice with commonly used welding processes and provides the opportunity to challenge the SMAW 1G and 2GF certification tests from the Canadian Welding Bureau (CWB). Successful candidates will receive a CWB Welding Ticket valid for two years. Additionally, the program offers Grade 12 Math equivalency and the opportunity to earn industry-recognized health and safety certifications, giving graduates a strong foundation for pursuing a career in welding or progressing into apprenticeship training.
