COURSE CURRICULUM

The Skilled Trades Exploration program at Fleming College is a two-semester, hands-on experience designed to introduce students to multiple trades while strengthening essential academic skills. In the first semester, students develop foundational knowledge in areas like welding and cutting processes, carpentry, tool fundamentals, and sketching and measuring systems. They also explore safety protocols with Health and Safety for the Trades and reflect on cultural awareness through Introduction to Indigenous Studies. A course in Career Investigations helps students assess various trade pathways and begin building a personalized career plan. The second semester expands into technical specialties with courses such as AutoCAD Fundamentals, Electrical Fundamentals, and Residential Mechanical Systems, providing a broader understanding of trade applications in real-world environments. Supporting these courses are academic fundamentals like Trade Science and Introduction to Trade Calculations, which help students solve routine technical problems using mathematical and scientific principles. Students also explore the growing field of sustainability through Renewable Energy Sources. With the inclusion of a general education elective, the program ensures a well-rounded experience that enhances both technical and soft skills. This program is ideal for students still deciding on a specific trade or seeking to confirm their interests through exposure to various disciplines. It provides a solid foundation for entry into more specialized trades training, apprenticeship programs, or further post-secondary education. Upon completion, students leave with enhanced confidence, technical knowledge, and a clearer understanding of their career options in the skilled trades sector.
