COURSE CURRICULUM
The Blasting Techniques program is a two-semester Ontario College Certificate that provides in-depth, hands-on training for those pursuing careers in the explosives and drilling industries. Delivered in person, the program begins with foundational courses in blasting fundamentals, blasthole drilling, and safety legislation, alongside math and trade calculations specific to the field. Students learn about the operating principles of hydraulic rock drills, types of explosives, and essential safety protocols, with a focus on proper handling, documentation, and the legal responsibilities of blasters. Courses such as Rig Maintenance and Repair and Product Knowledge for Blasting enhance technical skills by exploring equipment operations and explosive material identification. Career preparation, surface miner certification, and Indigenous studies round out the first semester by building broader workplace competencies and cultural awareness. In semester two, students deepen their expertise through courses like Construction Blasting and Quarrying, Blast Design and Layout, and Environmental Impact of Blasting, where they learn how to plan, execute, and assess blast performance while considering environmental and geological variables. Students gain exposure to certification-level material from the International Society of Explosives Engineers Level II. Advanced mathematics for blasting supports precise calculations in design and execution. The program also introduces Rock Studies, focusing on rock and mineral identification and the engineering properties relevant to drilling. Communications training ensures students can effectively convey technical information, while general education and Indigenous studies continue to broaden perspectives. Rig Maintenance and Repair is revisited for reinforcement of hands-on skills. With extensive lab and field training, the Blasting Techniques program uniquely prepares graduates for careers in mining, construction, quarrying, and even special effects industries. Through a combination of technical, environmental, and safety education, students develop the competencies required to work responsibly and effectively in this dynamic and high-demand sector.
