COURSE CURRICULUM

The Electrical Engineering Technician program at Fanshawe College spans four levels over two years and offers a structured curriculum that builds both theoretical knowledge and practical skills essential for careers in the electrical field. In Level 1, students take a 3-credit General Education elective along with core courses such as ELEC-1124 DC Theory, MATH-1184 Mathematics 1, ELEC-1125 Installation Practices, WRIT-1039 Reason & Writing 1 for Technology, and CNTL-1017 Introduction to Automation & Controls. These foundational courses introduce students to basic electrical principles, mathematical concepts, automation systems, and effective communication. In Level 2, students advance their technical skills through courses like ELEC-3064 AC Theory, CNTL-3020 Fluid Power & Automation, MATH-3072 Mathematics 2, COMP-1569 Electrical Design with AutoCAD, and ELNC-1114 Basic Electronic Devices. This level emphasizes applied learning with AutoCAD and automation systems, as well as deepens understanding of electrical circuits. Level 3 focuses on more complex systems with courses including CNTL-3021 Advanced PLC Control Systems, MGMT-3105 Sustainability & Business Practices, TELE-1021 Network Systems, ELEC-3074 Electrical Machines, ELNC-3042 Power Electronics, and ELEC-5042 Electrical Energy & Distribution. These courses provide students with expertise in PLCs, electrical machinery, and sustainability in engineering contexts. Finally, in Level 4, students complete their training with COMP-5073 Electrical Wiring Design/Industrial Design, MGMT-5098 Capstone Project Technician, COMM-3069 Technical Communication for Technicians, ELNC-5021 Electronic Motor Drives, and CNTL-5016 Advanced Automation Systems. This final phase emphasizes real-world project application, advanced automation, and communication in technical environments. Throughout the program, students engage with industry-relevant software, systems, and codes such as AutoCAD and the Canadian Electrical Code while developing problem-solving, safety, and project management skills to prepare for employment in electrical contracting, automation, power systems, and related industries.
