COURSE CURRICULUM

The Veterinary Assistant program is structured over two levels to provide students with both foundational knowledge and practical, hands-on skills needed for entry into animal care settings. In Level 1, students develop core competencies in veterinary practice, beginning with communication skills tailored to health sciences and essential mathematical applications for veterinary calculations and pharmacology. They study animal behaviour, anatomy and physiology, and the fundamentals of veterinary practice, while also gaining practical training in animal care, handling, nursing, and basic surgical support. Introductory courses in veterinary information technology and medical terminology help students understand professional clinical environments and documentation systems. In Level 2, students build on this foundation with more advanced training in animal care, handling, nursing procedures, grooming, nutrition, and laboratory techniques. They also gain experience working with laboratory, exotic, and specialized animals, expanding their versatility across different animal care environments. Personal wellness education supports student resilience and professional development in demanding clinical settings. A key component of the program is the field placement, where students apply their skills in real veterinary workplaces under supervision, gaining valuable industry experience. Overall, the program prepares graduates for entry-level positions in veterinary clinics, animal hospitals, shelters, and related animal care facilities through a balance of theory, applied learning, and practical experience.
