COURSE CURRICULUM

The Honours Bachelor of Early Childhood Leadership program at Fanshawe College is structured to provide students with comprehensive academic and practical training over eight levels and an internship, totaling a robust blend of foundational theory, applied practice, and leadership development in the early childhood education field. In Level 1, students begin with core subjects including Human Development Foundations, Holistic Wellness, Observing for Pedagogical Documentation, Interpersonal Communication, and Principles to Practice in Early Years. Level 2 builds on this foundation with courses focused on early development, wellness in young children, and curriculum planning for ages 0–3, supported by a field practicum and seminar. Level 3 and 4 expand students’ understanding with courses in adult development, family studies, philosophy of ECE, inclusive practices, and organizational structures, along with a second field practicum for ages 3–6. Levels 5 and 6 focus on leadership and advocacy, with subjects including quality assurance, managing projects, leadership in digital contexts, pedagogical leadership, and applied research methods, preparing students for professional challenges. The curriculum culminates in Levels 7 and 8 with a capstone research project in two parts, an advanced leadership course, and in-depth exploration of ECE program delivery and social policy in Canada. Students must also complete a minimum 14-week internship following Level 6 to apply their learning in real-world settings. Throughout the program, students engage in field seminars, case-based learning, and practical experiences that strengthen their communication, critical thinking, and leadership skills. Graduates emerge with the qualifications and confidence to take on leadership roles in early learning organizations, social services, and government, or to pursue further studies such as a B.Ed. or Master’s degree. This program holistically prepares students for the complexities of contemporary early childhood leadership in Canada and beyond.
