COURSE CURRICULUM

The Addictions and Mental Health graduate certificate program features a comprehensive course structure designed to develop both theoretical knowledge and clinical competencies. In Semester 1, students are introduced to foundational concepts including Group Counselling Practices, Introduction to Counselling Practices, and Theories, Models and Approaches to Mental Health, Addiction & Psychotherapy. They also explore Psychopharmacology, Addictions I: Bio-Psycho-Social Theories of Addiction Treatment, and Working with Youth and Families, while building ethical awareness through the Ethics course and beginning their experiential journey with Field Placement Preparation 1. In Semester 2, students advance into more applied areas with Case Management & Professional Practice, Addictions II: Contemporary Addiction Treatment Strategies, and Trauma-Informed Practices. The semester also includes Cognitive-Behavioural Based Psychoeducation, Person-In-Context/Diversity, Recovery-Oriented Practice: Working with Chronic, Severe Mental Health, and Field Placement Preparation 2, further preparing them for the field. Semester 3 is dedicated to a full-time placement course—Application of Addiction and Mental Health Treatment Strategies in Professional Settings—where students apply their learning in real-world environments under supervision. This immersive curriculum equips graduates with the clinical, ethical, and cultural competencies needed for effective practice in addiction and mental health services.
