COURSE CURRICULUM

In Semester 1 of the Chemical Engineering Technology program, students begin with Chemistry 1, which includes both theoretical lectures and practical laboratory sessions focused on fundamental chemical principles, such as atomic structure, chemical bonding, stoichiometry, and chemical reactions. Students also develop basic laboratory skills in solution preparation, the use of analytical balances, and simple instrumentation. The Analytical Techniques course teaches essential laboratory skills, including the proper use of equipment like the analytical balance, pipette, buret, pH meter, and spectrophotometer. Communication Foundations strengthens students' written, oral, and information literacy skills, providing a toolkit for both academic and professional success. The General Education Elective allows students to choose a course from a selection of available options, offering broader educational development. Mathematics for Technology I focuses on refreshing key mathematical concepts such as algebra, geometry, and trigonometry, with an emphasis on applying these skills to engineering problems. Finally, the Physical Science course introduces core concepts like statics, dynamics, electricity, and fluid mechanics, with an emphasis on problem-solving, algebraic manipulation, and correct unit specification for calculations. In Semester 2 of the Chemical Engineering Technology program, students delve into Organic Chemistry 1, where they familiarize themselves with organic chemical structures, functional groups, nomenclature, and basic reactions, while practicing foundational laboratory techniques for extraction and synthetic chemistry. Chemistry 2 builds on the concepts from the previous semester, focusing on periodic properties, chemical bonding, intermolecular forces, solutions, equilibria, and acid-base chemistry, with labs designed to develop skills in sample preparation, analysis, and the use of various instrumentation. The Electrical Control Fundamentals course introduces students to the theory of electricity, circuit theory (both DC and AC), electric motors, VFDs, control devices, and relay ladder logic, with a practical lab component to connect theory to industry applications. The General Education Elective offers students the opportunity to choose from a range of electives for broader development. Mathematics for Technology II expands on mathematical skills, covering topics like systems of linear equations, trigonometry, exponents, logarithms, and analytical geometry, all applied to practical problems. Applied Mechanics introduces students to static forces and moments in structures, with a focus on industrial workplace problems, using mathematical and calculator methods combined with free body diagrams for static solutions. In Semester 3 of the Chemical Engineering Technology program, students continue their exploration of organic chemistry in Organic Chemistry 2, where they delve into complex organic nomenclature, reaction mechanisms, and the prediction of reaction outcomes, alongside practical organic chemistry techniques. Analytical Chemistry 1 introduces students to analytical methods and their applications, focusing on gravimetric and volumetric analysis, emphasizing good laboratory technique, accuracy, precision, and data handling. Fluid Mechanics covers fundamental fluid properties, pressure, hydrostatic forces, buoyancy, fluid flow, flow measurement, and energy losses in piping systems and open channels. Environmental Regulations provides an in-depth review of environmental protection legislation at federal, provincial, and municipal levels, including acts such as the Canadian Environmental Protection Act and the Ontario Water Resources Act, along with key regulations like the Occupational Health and Safety Act. The Calculus course explores both differential and integral calculus, emphasizing their application in understanding relationships between variables like distance, velocity, and acceleration, as well as solving problems related to motion, areas, and volumes. Finally, Physical Chemistry introduces the fundamental principles that govern the behavior of matter in its various states, linking physical chemistry to process operations and unit operations, while also explaining modern techniques used to determine the structure and properties of matter. In Semester 4 of the Chemical Engineering Technology program, students focus on career development with a course on Career Planning & Development, which helps students strategize for ongoing personal and professional growth in a multi-disciplinary workplace. Analytical Instrumentation introduces students to the theory and practical application of spectroscopy and chromatography, where they use instruments like gas and liquid chromatographs and various spectrometry techniques to analyze samples. Analytical Chemistry 2 builds on the concepts from the first course, covering more advanced volumetric methods and instrumental analysis, with a focus on electrochemical and spectroscopic methods. Industrial Chemistry connects basic chemistry concepts to industrial applications, exploring topics such as electrochemistry, chemical kinetics, distillation, extraction, and hazard analysis for chemical and electrical safety. Statistical Methods in Quality Control equips students with statistical tools to monitor and improve product quality, introducing concepts such as descriptive and inferential statistics, probability distributions, sampling, and statistical quality control tools like control charts and Pareto diagrams. Finally, Thermodynamics examines the conversion of heat energy into mechanical work, introducing the fundamental concepts of thermodynamics, including the properties of systems, ideal gas laws, and thermodynamic cycles. In Semester 5 of the Chemical Engineering Technology program, students gain practical skills in multiple areas. Applied AutoCAD focuses on using AutoCAD for creating simple 2D drawings, including industrial process flow charts and instrumentation system layouts, while learning key drawing techniques like layering, dimensioning, and crosshatching. Spectroscopy 1 covers the theory and practical use of spectroscopic equipment, focusing on instruments like UV/visible, NMR, and mass spectrometry, with hands-on lab work to teach students how to follow standard operating procedures, run samples, and analyze data. Chromatography 1 introduces students to various chromatography techniques, including HPLC, GC, and mass spectrometry, with practical lab experience to complement theoretical knowledge. The Materials course offers an overview of material properties, focusing on their application in engineering and industrial uses. In the Field Placement course, students complete 80 hours of unpaid work experience, applying classroom knowledge in a real-world setting while receiving training in essential workplace skills such as WHMIS and health and safety protocols. The Industrial Waste course teaches students about the management and treatment of industrial waste, pollution prevention practices, and regulations, such as the Resource Recovery and Circular Economy Act, equipping students with the skills to address waste and emissions in an industrial context.
