COURSE CURRICULUM

The Photography program at Durham College offers a comprehensive curriculum designed to equip students with both the technical skills and creative vision needed for a successful career in professional photography. In the first semester, students build foundational skills through courses such as Audio Capture, Fundamentals of Lighting, Camera Operations, and Image Processing, while also learning video design and communication foundations. The second semester expands students’ knowledge with Documentary Video Capture, Pre-Production Concept Art, History of the Captured Image, Video Editing, and Compositional Design for Photography, alongside a general education elective. The third semester focuses on professional development and advanced technical skills, including The Business of Photography, Advanced Lighting, Creative Vision, Product and Portrait Photography, as well as continued image processing. In the final semester, students prepare to enter the industry with courses in Portfolio Development, Marketing and Promotion for Photographers, and specialized photography areas such as Fashion, Event, and Food and Beverage Photography. The program balances artistic exploration with practical business and marketing strategies, ensuring graduates are well-prepared to thrive in a competitive, evolving visual media landscape.
