Students also choose a *General Education Elective*, which varies by semester, allowing for a broader educational experience. *Indigenous Perspectives in Contemporary Media* explores the relationship between Indigenous peoples and Canada, emphasizing the importance of understanding Indigenous culture and media portrayals. Lastly, *Digital Photography & Editing* introduces students to DSLR photography and editing, with a focus on technical skills, artistic vision, and emerging photography trends, preparing students for creative work in the media industry. This semester provides a well-rounded introduction to the skills and knowledge needed for a career in broadcast media.In Semester 2 of the Broadcast Media program, students build on their foundational knowledge and skills while expanding their expertise into the realm of television, digital platforms, and video production. *On-Air Hosting and Show Preparation II* continues from the first semester, incorporating visual elements and basic television story construction, along with studio production techniques. Students rotate through on-air and technical roles to create live weekly webcasts. *Writing for Broadcast* teaches students to craft scripts for various broadcasting formats, including radio, TV, and the web. Through projects like audio documentaries, web programs, PSAs, and serialized podcasts, students learn proper script formatting and content creation, as well as how to pitch ideas. *Video Capture I (Documentary)* focuses on the technical and aesthetic aspects of video production, including camera operation, lighting, and video editing, with an emphasis on documentary-style content. *Video Editing I* delves into the creative art of video editing, teaching students to assemble footage into a coherent narrative using editing techniques commonly used in the broadcast industry. *Emerging Digital Platforms for Broadcast* explores the digital skills required for modern broadcasting, such as blogging, social media engagement, and online content creation, while also emphasizing digital rights and personal brand development. Students also select a *General Education Elective* to broaden their education in a subject of interest. This semester equips students with essential skills for working in television production, digital media, and online broadcasting.In Semester 3 of the Broadcast Media program, students deepen their expertise in key areas of media production, research, and promotion. *Interviewing & Research for Contemporary Media* teaches advanced interviewing techniques, focusing on video chats, one-on-one interviews, and telephone interviews. Students also learn to research topics, issues, and people using traditional methods, social media, and computer-assisted tools, and create multimedia projects incorporating research elements. *Sales, Marketing & Promotions* introduces students to marketing strategies within the broadcasting industry, where they work with both traditional and digital tools to promote media events, brands, and programs for real clients, while also examining global marketing trends and their impact on local operations. *Talk Radio and Feature Writing I* explores the history and evolution of talk radio, focusing on different formats, content creation, and audience interaction. Students gain practical experience by working in teams to conceive, produce, and host live talk shows. *Studio Experience Workshop I* provides hands-on experience producing live and packaged TV programming, including mobile production techniques and live streaming. Students work in various roles, including reporter, producer, and technical operator, through community partnerships with local broadcasters. *Video Capture II (Narrative)* builds on skills from the previous semester, challenging students to create personal and client-based video projects with a focus on theory, aesthetics, and professional HD equipment usage. This semester culminates in the creation of high-quality video content while expanding students' production and technical abilities across various media formats. A *General Education Elective* also offers students an opportunity to explore broader academic interests.In Semester 4, students continue to refine their broadcast media skills, with a focus on mobile journalism, radio programming, advanced talk radio, and production techniques. *Mobile Reporting* introduces students to the world of mobile journalism, where they learn how smartphones and tablets can be used to create multimedia content from anywhere in the world. Students explore the tools and techniques of mobile journalism, as well as the impact of citizen journalism and social media, culminating in content creation for the Downtown Oshawa News blog. *Radio Programming* delves into the structure of the Canadian radio industry, including CRTC regulations, radio station operations, audience analysis, revenue sources, and show production. Students also study traditional and emerging media platforms within radio. *Talk Radio and Feature Writing II* builds on earlier work, enhancing skills in audience engagement, segment production, developing strong opinions, and producing live talk shows. Students work in teams to produce a live talk show each week. *Studio Experience Workshop II* continues the real-world experience gained in the previous semester, where students produce live and packaged TV programming in partnership with local broadcasters. This includes mobile production techniques and live streaming for event coverage, with students rotating through various production roles. The *Field Placement for Broadcast* is a seven-week professional placement that allows students to gain hands-on experience in a TV/radio station or communications department. During this period, students take on various tasks like reporting, video production, writing, and on-air work. To prepare for this, students also complete the *Field Placement Seminar*, which provides tools and knowledge for securing and succeeding in their placement and in the job search. Lastly, *Video Editing II for Broadcast* advances students' editing skills, focusing on more complex feature pieces, film post-production techniques, and workflows, including editing for re-shoots and digital cinema post-production. This semester blends theory, practice, and professional experience, preparing students for the fast-paced and dynamic world of broadcasting.
