COURSE CURRICULUM

The Crane Operation program at Durham College includes a comprehensive set of courses designed to equip students with the practical skills, theoretical knowledge, and safety awareness required in the crane operation industry. In Semester 1, students are introduced to key concepts through courses such as Intro to Cranes, Job Safety, Maintenance I, Rigging Theory, Tools I, Communication Foundations, and Mathematics I. These foundational courses provide a strong base in crane mechanics, tool usage, safety protocols, and the mathematical principles critical to rigging and lifting operations. Semester 2 builds on this knowledge with more advanced and hands-on training, including Forklift Safety, Maintenance II, Rigging Math, and Rigging Practical, where students apply their calculations and theoretical knowledge in simulated or controlled environments. Additional courses such as Safety, Tools II, and 0–8 Ton provide focused instruction on specific equipment, tool handling, and safety procedures tailored to smaller crane operations, which are common on many job sites. This curriculum ensures that graduates are job-ready, with the skills and certifications necessary to safely and effectively operate cranes, perform routine maintenance, interpret load charts, and adhere to industry-standard safety regulations—making them valuable assets in the construction, industrial, and infrastructure sectors.
