COURSE CURRICULUM

The Community Mental Health degree program offers a comprehensive and interdisciplinary curriculum that prepares students to support individuals and communities affected by mental health challenges. Across eight semesters, students engage in a diverse range of courses combining psychology, sociology, ethics, health, and research methods. Early coursework builds foundational knowledge through subjects like Introduction to Psychology, Community Mental Health, Social Justice and Equality, and Healthcare and Legal Systems. As the program progresses, students explore specialized areas including Health Psychology, Counselling Theories, Addictions, Abnormal Psychology, Trauma and Resiliency, and Psychotherapy Modalities. Critical skills are developed through applied courses such as Therapeutic Communication Skills, Applied Counselling Skills, Crisis and Solution-Focused Interventions, and Group Counselling. The curriculum emphasizes ethical practice, cultural humility, recovery-oriented approaches, and evidence-based intervention strategies. Students are trained in both qualitative and quantitative research methods, culminating in a two-part thesis project. A 420-hour field placement enables students to apply their learning in real-world mental health settings, gaining hands-on experience. Courses in advocacy, professional development, and community needs assessment further equip students for leadership roles in the field. With a strong focus on practical skills, critical thinking, and compassionate care, graduates are well-prepared for diverse careers in community mental health services.
