COURSE CURRICULUM

The Honours Artificial Intelligence degree program at Durham College is structured across eight semesters, progressively building core knowledge and advanced expertise in AI. In the first year, students develop foundational skills through courses in artificial intelligence, programming, information systems, statistics, data science, discrete mathematics, and linear algebra, along with breadth electives. The second year introduces more specialized topics such as machine learning, data structures and algorithms, ethics and privacy in AI, calculus, classification and regression techniques, data management, and systems analysis and design. In the third year, students explore advanced concepts including artificial neural networks, data visualization, human-computer interaction, societal and legal issues, clustering, dimensionality reduction, computer vision, natural language processing, and research methods, while also preparing for field placement. A dedicated field placement semester provides real-world industry experience, allowing students to apply their learning in professional environments. In the final year, the program focuses on advanced neural networks, deep learning for sequential and spatial analysis, deploying AI systems, and project management. Students also study reinforcement learning, agile AI practices, business applications of AI, and complete a capstone project, ensuring they graduate with strong technical, analytical, and practical skills for careers in artificial intelligence.
