COURSE CURRICULUM

The Paralegal Honours Bachelor Degree program offers a comprehensive curriculum designed to prepare students for the legal profession with a strong foundation in both theory and practical skills. In Semester 1, students begin with courses such as Communications for the Paralegal Profession, The Private Law of Torts and Contracts 1, Introduction to the Law and Legal Systems of Canada, and Constitutional Law and the Charter, establishing a solid base in legal principles and communication. Semester 2 includes Technology for the Paralegal Profession, continuation of Private Law of Torts and Contracts 2, Provincial Offences: Prosecution and Defense, and Research and Writing for the Paralegal Profession, emphasizing practical legal research and writing skills. In Semester 3, students study Legal Accounting Principles, Small Claims Court, Criminal Justice System and Summary Convictions, and Administrative Law, focusing on procedural law and courtroom processes. Semester 4 introduces History and Philosophy of Law, Rights and Duties of Residential Landlords and Tenants, Insurance Law, and Employment Law, broadening their understanding of specialized legal areas. Semester 5 includes Indigenous Law, Critical Race Theories, and Statistics, enhancing cultural competency and analytical skills. Semester 6 focuses on Professional Ethics, Field Placement Preparation, Paralegal Practice before Administrative Tribunals, Advocacy Strategies, and Research Methodologies in Law, integrating theory with practice. During the Field Placement semester, students gain hands-on experience in legal settings. Semesters 7 and 8 cover Alternative Dispute Resolution, Special Topics in Law, Adjudication and Writing Decisions, Evidence and Litigation Rules, Courtroom Advocacy, Paralegal Practice Management, and a Thesis Project, culminating in advanced skills in advocacy, management, and legal research.
