COURSE CURRICULUM

The Therapeutic Recreation Diploma at Douglas College comprises 61 credits of comprehensive coursework designed to prepare students for careers in promoting health and well-being through purposeful leisure. The program begins with foundational courses such as Introduction to Anatomy and Physiology (BIOL 1104), Academic Writing (ENGL 1130), and Lifespan Human Development (PSYC 1130), providing essential background in biological, developmental, and communication principles. Students explore cultural understanding in CFCS 2432, which focuses on Aboriginal perspectives and experiences. Core therapeutic recreation courses include Therapeutic Recreation Foundations (THRT 1101), Leisure & Community Recreation (THRT 1102), and Professional Skills and Person-Centred Approaches (THRT 1122), setting the stage for specialized training. Practical leadership and health promotion skills are developed through Recreation Leadership I and II (THRT 1203, THRT 2406), Principles and Practices of Health (THRT 1204), and Communication Skills for Recreation and Health Professionals (THRT 1205). The curriculum continues with focused studies in Inclusive Leisure Practice (THRT 2306), mental health and diversity (THRT 2307), psychosocial aspects of aging (THRT 2308), and physical fitness in therapeutic contexts (THRT 2309). Students engage in the TR Process (THRT 2301) and explore disabling conditions and chronic health in courses like THRT 2407 and THRT 2408. Two practicum placements—Therapeutic Recreation Practice I and II (THRT 2333, THRT 2444)—provide essential real-world experience in health care or community settings, applying theoretical learning in supervised environments. The program emphasizes inclusive, person-centred approaches that promote independence, community integration, and improved quality of life across diverse populations. With a strong mix of theory, leadership, diversity awareness, and practical training, graduates are well-equipped to plan, deliver, and evaluate effective recreation programs that address the unique needs of individuals with physical, mental, or developmental challenges in a variety of settings such as hospitals, long-term care, rehabilitation, and community organizations.
