COURSE CURRICULUM

The Diploma in Legal Studies requires the successful completion of 60 credits, combining core legal education with a strong liberal arts foundation. Students begin with foundational courses such as BLAW 1320 (Introduction to Business Law), CRIM 1100 (The Criminal Justice System), and CRIM 1160 (Introduction to the Canadian Legal System). The curriculum then deepens into specialized topics including CRIM 2260 (Criminal Law), CRIM 2261 (The Administration of Justice), and CRIM 3362 (Criminal Procedure and Evidence). Legal-specific skills are developed through LGST 1110 (Legal Research and Reasoning) and LGST 1120 (Legal Processes and Remedies). Students also gain exposure to the two main branches of law with LGST 2210 (Private Law) and LGST 2220 (Public Law). To broaden their understanding of the political and social context of law, students take POLI 1102 (Introduction to Canadian Government) and PSYC 1100 (Introduction to Psychology I). An additional seven university-transferable elective courses (21 credits) allow students to explore various subjects and tailor the program to their interests. To further strengthen their reasoning and analytical skills, students select one course from a range of philosophy options: PHIL 1101 (Critical Thinking), PHIL 1102 (Values and Contemporary Issues), PHIL 1103 (Knowledge, Reason and Experience), PHIL 1152 (Reality and Existence), or PHIL 1201 (Logical Reasoning). This well-rounded program equips graduates with both specialized legal knowledge and broad academic skills, preparing them for further study or entry-level roles in legal, government, and public service fields.
