COURSE CURRICULUM

The General Business Diploma at Douglas College requires completion of 60 credits, providing a well-rounded foundation in business principles and practices. Students start by choosing between Business Communication (CMNS 1115) or Academic Writing (ENGL 1130), with the option to substitute equivalent English or Communications courses transferable to major B.C. research universities. Communication skills are further developed by selecting one course from options including Interpersonal Skills for the Workplace (CMNS 1216), Intercultural Communication in the Workplace (CMNS 1217), Understanding and Managing Interpersonal Conflict (CMNS 2316), or Personal Selling (MARK 2150). For economics, students select from The Canadian Economy (ECON 1101), Principles of Microeconomics (ECON 1150), or Principles of Macroeconomics (ECON 1250), with the latter two required for BBA degree pathways. Students also choose between Introductory Business Law (BLAW 1320) or Business Ethics (PHIL 1122) to deepen their understanding of legal and ethical business practices. Core required courses include Principles of Accounting I and II (ACCT 1110, 1210), Management Essentials (BUSN 1210), Business Mathematics (FINC 1231), Excel for Business (CSIS 1190), and Introductory Marketing (MARK 1120). The capstone component offers a choice between Entrepreneurship and New Venture Development (BUSN 3253) or Business Strategy and Simulation (BUSN 2275), allowing students to apply their knowledge in practical, strategic contexts. Additionally, students must complete six elective courses from the Faculty of Commerce and Business Administration (18 credits) and three general electives (9 credits) from 1000-4000 level college courses to broaden their expertise. This comprehensive program balances theoretical foundations with practical skills, preparing graduates for diverse roles in business and management while providing pathways to further academic or professional certification.
