COURSE CURRICULUM

The Diploma in Criminology requires a total of 60 credits, with a combination of required courses, electives, and specialized selections to provide a well-rounded education in the field. Students must choose one course between Introduction to Policing (CRIM 1120) or Introduction to Corrections (CRIM 1170), followed by a choice between Psychological Explanations of Criminal Behaviour (CRIM 2251) or Sociological Explanations of Criminal Behaviour (CRIM 2252). Additionally, students select one philosophy course from options such as Critical Thinking (PHIL 1101) or Logical Reasoning (PHIL 2201) to develop their analytical skills. The required core courses include Introduction to the Criminal Justice System (CRIM 1100), Introduction to Criminology (CRIM 1150), The Canadian Legal System (CRIM 1160), Interviewing and Professional Skills (CRIM 2140), Criminal Law (CRIM 2260), and foundational courses in English (ENGL 1130 or other University Transferable English courses), Psychology (PSYC 1100), and Sociology (SOCI 1125). Furthermore, students must select between four to six criminology or legal studies courses at the 1000 to 4000 level, ensuring a deeper exploration of the discipline. To complement their studies, students also take three to five university-transferable electives from relevant disciplines such as anthropology, geography, history, political science, and sociology, enhancing their understanding of social and cultural contexts related to criminology. This comprehensive curriculum equips students with critical knowledge and practical skills necessary for careers in the criminal justice system, law enforcement, social services, and related fields, while maintaining flexibility through elective choices to tailor the program to individual interests and career goals.
