COURSE CURRICULUM

The Accounting Diploma at Douglas College consists of 60 credits and provides students with a strong mix of theoretical knowledge and practical skills necessary for a successful career in accounting. Students begin by selecting between two pathways for foundational accounting: either ACCT 1110 and ACCT 1210 (Principles of Accounting I and II) or ACCT 1235 (combined Principles of Accounting I & II) along with a CBA Faculty elective. Communication skills are developed through a choice of either Business Communication (CMNS 1115) or Academic Writing (ENGL 1130). Core accounting courses include Computer Applications for Accounting (ACCT 1222), Introductory and Intermediate Managerial Accounting (ACCT 2320, 3420), and Intermediate Accounting I and II (ACCT 3310, 3410), covering topics such as financial reporting, cost control, and decision-making. Students gain essential legal and business knowledge through Introductory Business Law (BLAW 1320) and Management Essentials (BUSN 1210). Technical competency is emphasized with Excel for Business (CSIS 1190) and Systems Analysis and Design (CSIS 2200), while financial acumen is developed in Business Mathematics (FINC 1231), Corporate Finance (FINC 2340), and Business Statistics (BUSN 2429). A solid understanding of economic principles is provided through Microeconomics (ECON 1150) and Macroeconomics (ECON 1250), and students explore market fundamentals in Introductory Marketing (MARK 1120). To further tailor their education, students complete two electives from approved disciplines such as ACCT, BUSN, BLAW, CSIS, ECON, FINC, or MARK. The program also integrates modern accounting software like QuickBooks, Sage 50, and Excel, ensuring graduates are technically equipped to manage financial records, support decision-making, and perform key accounting functions in small to medium-sized enterprises. This diploma positions students for junior accounting and finance roles or further study toward professional designations such as the CPA.
