COURSE CURRICULUM

The Certificate in Performing and Fine Arts at Douglas College requires students to complete a total of 30 credits, with at least 50% (15 credits) completed at Douglas College to meet the residency requirement. The curriculum is structured across three lists. In List A – Core Courses (9 credits), students must complete PEFA 1101 (Arts and Culture in Canada), PEFA 1102 (Arts of the Modern World), and any university-transferable ENGL course (ENGL 11XX). From List B – PEFA Options, students must complete a minimum of 12 credits by choosing from a wide selection of courses, including PEFA 1116 (Introduction to Film Studies), PEFA 1120 (Introduction to Acting), PEFA 1136 (Introduction to Music), PEFA 1216 (Canadian Film Studies), and additional specialized courses in acting, directing, music history, and career development. List C requires a minimum of 9 credits and allows students to tailor their education by selecting from a broad range of courses in areas such as communications, creative writing, English literature, music theory and ensembles, stagecraft and technical theatre, and theatre history. Options include CRWR 1101 (Introduction to Writing Poetry), ENGL 1106 (Reading Fiction), MUSC 1101 (Materials of Music I), STGE 1100 (Drafting for Stage), and THEA 1130 (History of Theatre I), among many others. This flexible and interdisciplinary curriculum allows students to explore their creative interests across the performing and fine arts while gaining a well-rounded foundation for further study or entry-level careers in arts and culture.
