COURSE CURRICULUM

The Certificate in Criminal Justice is a comprehensive 30-credit program designed to provide students with foundational knowledge of the Canadian justice system. Core courses include CRIM 1100: Introduction to the Criminal Justice System, CRIM 1120: Introduction to Policing, CRIM 1160: The Canadian Legal System, and CRIM 1170: Introduction to Corrections, offering a broad overview of law enforcement, legal processes, and corrections. Students will also study ENGL 1130: Academic Writing (or any university-transferable English course), which strengthens written communication skills essential for justice-related fields. Complementary courses such as PSYC 1100: Introduction to Psychology I and SOCI 1125: Social Processes provide insight into the social and psychological factors influencing criminal behavior and societal responses to crime. To tailor their learning, students must complete two criminology or legal studies electives at the 1000–4000 level (with lower-level courses requiring university transferability) and one additional university-transferable elective from any discipline. This well-rounded curriculum equips students with critical thinking, analytical, and communication skills needed to pursue further education or entry-level careers in policing, corrections, community outreach, legal support, and other justice-related sectors. The certificate serves both as a career launching pad and a stepping stone toward advanced study in criminology or law.
