COURSE CURRICULUM

The Certificate in Academic Foundations requires the successful completion of 30 university-transferable credits, allowing students to customize their studies while meeting broad foundational requirements. To begin, students must complete one university-transferable English course. This can be an ENGL course or a CMNS/CRWR course that transfers as English to UBC, UBCO, SFU, UNBC, or UVic. Next, students are required to complete one course in Mathematics, Statistics, or Computing Science. Options may include MATH 1160, PSYC 2300, BUSN 2429, or any CMPT/CSIS/CISY course that is transferable. A university-transferable lab science course must also be completed, with subjects such as BIOL, CHEM, PHYS, GEOG, GEOL, or SCIE being acceptable choices. In addition to these core areas, students must select between 12 to 21 credits in Arts and/or Sciences electives, providing the opportunity to explore various disciplines including psychology, sociology, history, philosophy, biology, or chemistry. To reach the total of 30 required credits, students may also choose between 0 to 9 credits of general university-transferable electives. These can be from any academic discipline that qualifies under the BC Transfer Guide, offering maximum flexibility and personalization. This structure is designed to provide both breadth and depth, ensuring students acquire essential academic skills while exploring areas of interest. The certificate serves as an excellent launchpad for further studies and is ideal for students who want to begin post-secondary education without committing to a specific field right away, while still earning fully transferable credits.
