COURSE CURRICULUM

The Certificate in Academic Foundations for Potential Psychiatric Nursing Applicants at Douglas College requires completion of 30 credits through 10 university-transferable courses designed to prepare students for entry into the Bachelor of Science in Psychiatric Nursing (BSPN) program. Students must select one statistics course from Business Statistics (BUSN 2429), Introduction to Statistics (MATH 1160), or Data Analysis in Psychology (PSYC 2300), each worth three credits. The required science courses include Human Anatomy and Physiology I (BIOL 1103), Human Anatomy and Physiology II (BIOL 1203), Pathophysiology (BIOL 2200), and Introductory Microbiology for Health Sciences (BIOL 2401), each three credits, providing a strong foundation in biological sciences. Academic and communication skills are developed through courses such as Academic Writing (ENGL 1130) and an additional university-transferable English elective, both three credits. Psychology knowledge is covered through two introductory courses: An Introduction to Psychology I (PSYC 1100) and An Introduction to Psychology II (PSYC 1200), each three credits. Finally, students choose one university-transferable elective to complete the 30-credit requirement. This comprehensive mix of science, social science, and communication courses equips students with the essential skills and knowledge to succeed in the BSPN program. Completion of these courses ensures students meet the academic prerequisites for the program and enhances their readiness for the demands of psychiatric nursing studies.
