COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Therapeutic Recreation program requires the successful completion of 121 credits, integrating foundational knowledge, specialized courses, and hands-on experience to prepare students for a dynamic career in recreational therapy. Core requirements include anatomy and physiology (BIOL 1104), academic writing (ENGL 1130), and an additional university-transferable ENGL or CMNS elective. Psychology plays a key role, with students taking introductory courses (PSYC 1100 or 1200), lifespan development (PSYC 1130), and abnormal psychology (PSYC 2341), which is also required for NCTRC certification. Courses such as PHIL 4706 explore ethics in therapeutic recreation and health promotion, while CFCS 2432 enhances understanding of Indigenous perspectives. Students progress through a series of specialized therapeutic recreation (THRT) courses covering foundational knowledge (THRT 1101), leadership (THRT 1203, 2406, 3506), communication (THRT 1205), recreation process and programming (THRT 2302, 2306, 2407), diversity and mental health (THRT 2307, 2308), and physical wellness (THRT 2309, 2408). Advanced courses include leisure counselling (THRT 3505), community development (THRT 3601), research (THRT 3710), and management (THRT 4701). The program culminates in a comprehensive 12-credit internship (THRT 4855), supported by courses in assessment (THRT 4901), leisure education (THRT 4702), and current issues in the field (THRT 4802). Students also complete electives—two upper-level (3000–5999 level) and two lower- or upper-level university-transferable courses—providing academic flexibility. This well-rounded curriculum ensures graduates are fully equipped to assess, plan, deliver, and evaluate therapeutic recreation services in diverse healthcare and community settings, empowering individuals of all ages to overcome barriers and lead fulfilling lives through leisure and recreation.
