COURSE CURRICULUM

Bachelor of Science in Nursing program at Douglas College requires students to complete a comprehensive set of courses totaling 94.00 credits, focused on building professional knowledge, practical skills, and leadership capabilities. The curriculum includes a progression of theory-based and clinical practice courses beginning with foundational subjects such as professional nursing foundations, health assessment for adults and older adults, introductory pharmacology, and beginning client care practice. Students then advance into more specialized topics such as acute health challenges, evidence-informed practice, and interprofessional collaboration. The program also includes a strong focus on family-centered care, maternal and child health, and health promotion partnerships, supported by leadership and relational practice courses that emphasize engagement with families. In the later stages, students study community health, mental health, vulnerable populations, and complex health challenges, with continued emphasis on ethics, leadership, and nursing inquiry. Clinical practice components are included in every level, ensuring students have direct, supervised experience in a variety of care settings. Assessment skills are continually developed alongside the complexity of patient needs. In their final year, students choose between two transition pathways: one focusing on professional transition with both theory and practicum, and another emphasizing a comprehensive practicum experience through the Pathways course. Students must also complete a nursing elective chosen from a list of approved courses, allowing for exploration of specific areas of interest within the discipline. Throughout the program, courses are carefully designed to integrate knowledge and clinical experience, with a strong emphasis on safe, ethical, and evidence-based nursing care. The entire structure prepares graduates to meet the complex and evolving needs of the healthcare system with confidence, critical thinking, and professional competence.
