COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Arts in Child and Youth Care is a comprehensive four-year degree program designed to prepare students for professional roles supporting children, youth, and families in diverse community settings. In Year 1, students are introduced to foundational topics such as community practice, lifespan development, child and youth care principles, and activity programming, alongside English and electives, totaling 31.5 credits. Year 2 deepens the focus with courses on counselling, behavioural support, legislation, family development, mental health, Aboriginal perspectives, and two practical placements, further building hands-on skills and knowledge. In Year 3, students explore advanced themes including child protection, developmental theory, professional practice, and research methods, while engaging with critical issues and completing university-transferable electives to broaden their academic exposure. This year totals 27 credits. The final year includes two capstone practicums—each spanning 4.5 credits—providing students with eight months of immersive, supervised field experience. Complementing these are advanced courses in leadership, attachment, and working with individuals, groups, and families in child and youth care, as well as an international studies component and electives, culminating in 33 total credits. The entire program consists of 120 credits and integrates academic theory, cultural competence, and real-world application through field placements. Graduates are equipped to take on supervisory or team leader roles in schools, community centres, residential programs, and youth-focused services, including those addressing mental health, substance use, family violence, and at-risk youth. The program’s interdisciplinary approach, emphasis on practical experience, and focus on Indigenous perspectives ensure graduates are not only job-ready but also prepared to advocate for and support vulnerable populations in a variety of professional contexts.
