COURSE CURRICULUM

Confederation College’s Social Service Worker program is a two-year diploma designed to equip students with the essential knowledge, practical skills, and real-world experience needed to make a positive impact in the lives of individuals and communities. The curriculum begins with foundational courses such as College Writing, Interpersonal Effectiveness, Social Welfare, Family Dynamics, Sociology, and an introduction to the profession through Foundations of Social Service Work Practice and Intimate Personal Violence. In the second semester, students deepen their understanding through courses in Psychology, Addictions, Community Practice, Mental Health, Counselling Skills, Case Management, and specialized communications training for community services. The third semester emphasizes practical application with a field placement and seminar, supported by coursework in Group Process and Practice, SSW Theory and Methods I, and an elective from a range of General Education options. The final semester continues this focus on professional development with a second, more advanced field placement and seminar, while also exploring Diversity in SSW Practice and SSW Theory and Methods II. Students graduate with a broad, interdisciplinary perspective and are prepared to work with various population groups in settings such as social service agencies, schools, shelters, and hospitals. This program offers an excellent foundation for professional practice and provides pathways for further education, including an accelerated option for those with prior diplomas or degrees, as well as articulation agreements with Lakehead University. Graduates are also eligible to apply for membership with the Ontario College of Social Workers and Social Service Workers, enhancing their credentials and career prospects.
