COURSE CURRICULUM

Confederation College’s Practical Nursing program provides a well-rounded, hands-on education designed to prepare students for a career as a Registered Practical Nurse (RPN) in Ontario. Over the course of four semesters, students study a range of subjects critical to modern nursing practice. In the first semester, courses include College Writing, Anatomy & Physiology I, Professional Practice I, Foundations of Nursing Practice, Therapeutic Nurse-Client Relationships, Technical Concepts in Health Care, and Nursing Arts Lab I: Fundamentals, supported by psychology and general education electives. Semester two focuses on chronic care, with courses like Nursing Care Across the Lifespan, Nursing Assessment, Communication for Health Professionals, Anatomy & Physiology II, Clinical Practice I: Chronic Care, and Nursing Arts Lab II. The third semester transitions students to acute care, featuring Clinical Practice II, Nursing Arts Lab III, Pharmacology I, Medical-Surgical Nursing I, Pathophysiology I, and Professional Practice II. In semester four, students build on their learning with a compressed format, including Clinical Practice III: Complex Care, Nursing Arts Lab IV, Pharmacology II, Pathophysiology II, and Medical-Surgical Nursing II. The program concludes with a full-time Clinical Practice IV: Preceptorship, providing students with 240 hours of hands-on experience in a healthcare setting under the guidance of a qualified preceptor. This comprehensive and progressive structure ensures graduates are fully prepared to meet the entry-to-practice competencies required by the College of Nurses of Ontario and pursue a rewarding career in diverse healthcare environments.
