COURSE CURRICULUM

Confederation College’s Early Childhood Education program is structured over four semesters, combining theoretical knowledge with practical experience to prepare students for a career supporting young children’s development. In the first semester, foundational courses such as College Writing, Theoretical Approaches in Early Childhood Education, Effective Interpersonal Communications, and Sociology of Community: The Indigenous Context provide students with an understanding of child development through various lenses, including cultural and social perspectives. The second semester focuses on applied learning with Communications for Community Services, Pedagogical Approaches in Early Childhood Education I, Play Responsive Practice, and a significant Field Placement I that consists of intensive 32 hours per week for three weeks, offering valuable real-world experience in early learning environments. Students also take a general education elective to broaden their perspectives. The third semester continues to deepen practical skills with Health, Safety and Well-being Practices, FDK (Full-Day Kindergarten) and School Age Practices, Pedagogical Approaches in Early Childhood Education II, and a second Field Practicum II and Seminar with an extended placement of 32 hours per week for four weeks, allowing further immersion in professional practice. An elective course complements this semester. The final semester emphasizes professional reflection and readiness with the Reflective Educator in Professional Practice course and the third and most extensive Field Practicum III & Seminar, totaling 355 hours, where students demonstrate their competence and readiness to enter the workforce. This program integrates hands-on learning, collaborative dialogue, and current educational trends, ensuring graduates are well-equipped to foster nurturing, inclusive environments for children and families. Additionally, students can seamlessly transition to related undergraduate degrees at Lakehead University through a joint admission pathway, further advancing their career opportunities in early childhood education.
