COURSE CURRICULUM

Developmental Services Worker (DSW) diploma program offers a comprehensive blend of theory, hands-on practice, and real-world experience designed to prepare students for meaningful careers supporting individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities. In the first semester, students build foundational knowledge with courses such as College Writing, Professionalism and Field Placement Preparation, Developmental Disabilities, Pharmacology, Applied Behavioural Analysis, and Health Promotion. The second semester introduces deeper learning with Communications for Community Services, Intervention Strategies, Dual Diagnosis, Person-Directed Planning, and the first of two extensive field placements, which provides 336 hours of on-the-job experience in community settings. In the third semester, the focus expands to include broader developmental and societal contexts through courses such as Child Development, Social Welfare, Trends and Issues in Developmental Services, Behavioural Support Strategies, and Augmentative Communication & Assistive Technology, along with a general education elective to round out the learning experience. The fourth and final semester emphasizes advanced practice and transition into the field with courses including Teaching Strategies, Counselling Skills, and Community Development, a second field placement totaling 294 hours, and a final elective. Throughout the program, students gain practical experience in lab settings and collaborate with community partners through events and placement opportunities. The curriculum emphasizes inclusion, individualization, empowerment, and equity, preparing graduates to work in a variety of roles across schools, residential programs, day supports, and advocacy organizations. An accelerated option is available for those with prior education in related fields, and students can also take advantage of a joint admission pathway to Lakehead University for further studies. With its strong focus on real-world skills and values-based education, the DSW program equips students to make a genuine difference in the lives of others and to promote inclusive communities.
