COURSE CURRICULUM

The Civil Engineering Technician program at Confederation College is a two-year diploma designed to equip students with the practical skills and theoretical knowledge required for a successful career in the civil engineering field. Over four academic terms, students are immersed in core technical subjects while gaining hands-on experience with industry-standard tools and technologies. In the first term, students are introduced to key concepts through courses such as Statics I, Construction Materials and Methods, Introductory Surveying, Basic Drafting, College Writing, Technology Math I, and Microsoft Office. The second term builds on this foundation with Occupational Health & Safety, Statics II, Advanced Surveying (Field School), Construction Drawing with CAD, Communications for Technology, Technology Math II, and one Indigenous studies elective, either Indigenous Identity in Relation to Land or Sociology of Community: The Indigenous Context. In the third term, students continue developing their technical expertise through Construction Management I, Strength of Materials, Construction Planning, Geomatics, Soil Mechanics I, Computer Applications in Civil Engineering, and a general elective. The final term focuses on advanced topics and field preparation, including Hydraulics, Work Experience, Steel Design, Concrete Design, Materials Testing, Highway Construction, and Professional Practice, along with a final elective. Throughout the program, students work with technologies such as CAD software, surveying equipment, and civil engineering-specific computer applications. A planned work placement in the final term provides valuable real-world experience. Graduates are well-prepared for entry-level roles in areas such as city planning, road and highway construction, structural design, surveying, soil and materials testing, and project management. With small class sizes and a curriculum designed for hands-on learning, the program is ideal for individuals with strong math and problem-solving skills who are passionate about infrastructure, construction, and building the future of our communities.
