COURSE CURRICULUM

Confederation College’s Heavy Equipment Technician program offers a comprehensive two-semester curriculum designed to equip students with essential skills for a career in heavy-duty equipment maintenance and repair. The first semester features modular learning, beginning with Applied Work Practices for five weeks (90 hours), followed by Engine and Ancillary Systems for five weeks (90 hours), and Electrical/Electronics I for four weeks (72 hours), alongside Communications for the Trades totaling 42 hours across 14 weeks. Students must maintain a minimum 2.0 GPA in first-semester courses and complete prerequisites to progress. The second semester intensifies hands-on training with specialized courses including Fluid Power Systems, Electrical/Electronics II, Heavy Duty Fuel Systems, Drive Train Systems, and Steering, Suspension, and Brakes, each delivered over three to four weeks with approximately 60 to 80 hours per course. The program culminates in a two-week, 80-hour field placement, offering real-world experience in a professional setting. The semester’s total hours for practical courses emphasize skill development in hydraulics, electrical systems, fuel systems, and drivetrain technologies crucial for modern heavy equipment operation and maintenance.
