COURSE CURRICULUM
Confederation College’s Dental Hygiene advanced diploma is a comprehensive three-year program that prepares students to become skilled, compassionate oral healthcare professionals. The first semester establishes a strong foundation with courses in college writing, microbiology, histology, embryology, orofacial anatomy, radiography theory, anatomy and physiology, and an introduction to dental hygiene principles. In the second semester, students continue developing core competencies through advanced instruction in dental hygiene principles, preventative oral health promotion, dental materials, anatomy and physiology II, and an elective, while also exploring the dental hygiene profession. The third semester deepens clinical and theoretical knowledge with studies in pharmacology, periodontology, nutrition, human pathophysiology, and communication for health professionals, along with Preventative Oral Health Promotion II and a novice-level clinical placement to begin applying practical skills. In the fourth semester, students progress into intermediate clinical work and take courses in oral pathology, research methods, and community health, while exploring the impact of culture and diversity on health beliefs and practices, complemented by another elective. The fifth semester focuses on advanced clinical practice and the broader professional landscape, including courses in evidence-informed practice, the role of dental hygiene in orthodontics, business principles for health professionals, and community health care and promotion, with an additional elective. In the final semester, students synthesize all previous learning in a full clinical consolidation placement alongside courses in case-based concepts, dental hygiene practice administration, health policy and advocacy, pain management, and professional practice and jurisprudence. Accredited by the Commission on Dental Accreditation of Canada (CDAC), this program prepares students to write the National Dental Hygiene Certification Examination (NDHCB). Graduates are qualified to work in a wide range of settings, including private dental offices, public health units, and long-term care facilities. With a strong blend of theoretical knowledge and hands-on experience, students graduate ready to make a lasting difference in oral health care.
