COURSE CURRICULUM

The Business Administration – Accounting three-year diploma program at Confederation College offers a thorough and practical education for students pursuing careers in accounting and finance. In the first semester, students gain foundational knowledge through courses in financial accounting, business math, college writing, marketing, human resources, and introductory business concepts, along with a general education elective. The second semester builds on these fundamentals with courses in financial accounting II, microeconomics, business communications, Excel, organizational behaviour, financial math, and marketing II. In the third semester, the focus shifts toward more specialized accounting knowledge, including intermediate accounting I, management accounting I, accounting practices I, macroeconomics, statistics, and a general elective. The fourth semester further develops technical skills with courses in finance I, intermediate accounting II, accounting information systems, taxation I, accounting practices II, business law, and another elective. In the fifth semester, students explore advanced topics such as not-for-profit and public sector accounting, auditing, finance II, project management, management accounting II, taxation II, and accounting practices III. The final semester includes a comprehensive full-time work placement (540 hours) supported by a preparatory course, giving students the opportunity to apply their academic knowledge in real-world professional environments. Throughout the program, students learn to record financial transactions and prepare financial statements in compliance with Canadian GAAP, contribute to strategic decision-making using advanced management and financial accounting concepts, prepare individual and corporate tax returns, analyze organizational structures and internal control systems, and manage projects effectively. The program also includes insight into economic factors, legislation, ethics, and technology that affect business operations. Designed to prepare students for accounting roles across a wide range of sectors, the program also supports further academic and professional advancement through university articulation agreements and eligibility for accounting designations. First-year students begin in the two-year Business – Accounting program before progressing to the third year.
