COURSE CURRICULUM

The Mental Health, Addiction and Substance Use graduate certificate program offers a comprehensive curriculum designed to equip students with the skills and knowledge needed to effectively support individuals and communities facing mental health and substance use challenges. In Level 1, students build a strong foundation through courses such as Mental Health in Society, Mental Health Measurement, and Holistic Approaches to Wellness. They explore Conditions that Elevate Risk and Evidence-Based Interventions, preparing them for collaborative practice with other professionals. These courses emphasize understanding the social context of mental health and applying evidence-based strategies to support wellness. Moving into Level 2, the focus shifts to more specialized topics such as Trauma-Informed Care and Services, Human Rights, Law and Legislation, and Examining Complexity in At-Risk Populations, which deepen students’ understanding of the systemic and legal frameworks affecting mental health care. Integrated Health Collaborations and Planning and Facilitating Program Evaluation provide practical skills in working across sectors and assessing program effectiveness. The program culminates with a Capstone Knowledge Integration Project, where students apply their learning to real-world challenges, synthesizing theoretical and practical knowledge. This program prepares graduates for roles ranging from front-line support to program development, while also providing a strong foundation for further clinical graduate studies. Through a combination of theory, applied learning, and collaborative practice, students gain the competencies needed to contribute meaningfully to mental health, addiction, and substance use support systems.
