COURSE CURRICULUM

The Social Service Worker program offers a comprehensive curriculum designed to prepare students for effective practice within diverse communities. At Level 1, students begin with foundational courses such as Group Process and Dynamics, Introduction to Professional Practice, Decolonizing Social Service Work, and Social Service Systems, alongside essential communication and general education courses. These courses provide the base knowledge of social systems, professional ethics, and interpersonal dynamics. In Level 2, students advance to specialized courses including Techniques of Interviewing and Assessment, Transformative Practices: Theory to Action, Community Interventions, and a Field Seminar to prepare for professional practice, further developing practical skills and theoretical understanding of social service work. Level 3 emphasizes applied learning and field experience through Field Placement I, alongside courses like Professional Communication, Group Work: Assessment, Intervention and Evaluation, Supportive Counselling with Families, and Community Interventions: Theory to Action, which focus on hands-on skills for assessment, counselling, and community engagement. In the final year, Level 4, students complete Field Placement II to gain further real-world experience, while exploring complex issues in courses such as Violence, Trauma, and Abuse, Group Work: Community Applications, and Simulation: Trauma, Mental Health, and Addictions. These advanced courses deepen students’ understanding of trauma-informed care and specialized interventions in social service practice. Throughout the program, students are required to pass general education electives to complement their core studies, ensuring a well-rounded educational experience. This program integrates theoretical knowledge, practical skills, and field experience to equip graduates with the competencies necessary for successful careers as social service workers, ready to support individuals, families, and communities while promoting social justice and equity.
