COURSE CURRICULUM

The Pharmacy Technician program is a comprehensive two-year diploma designed to equip students with the knowledge and skills required to work effectively in various pharmacy settings such as community pharmacies, hospitals, and specialty pharmacy environments. In Level 1, students build foundational skills through courses like Pharmaceutical Math, Pharmacology, Community Pharmacy Practice, Pharmacy Legislation, and Inventory Management, along with essential health care models and communication. Level 2 advances their expertise with Anatomy and Physiology, Patient Communication, Pharmacotherapeutics, and Compounding, alongside community pharmacy practice and non-prescription medications. At Level 3, students focus on specialized areas such as Pharmacotherapeutics 2, Compounding and Specialized Compounding, Institutional Dispensing, Sterile Preparation, Long Term Care Pharmacy Practice, and multidisciplinary collaboration, with a course addressing reconciliation and work with Indigenous populations to promote cultural competence. In the final Level 4, students engage in practical field placements across community, hospital, and specialty pharmacy settings, providing valuable hands-on experience. Additional courses such as Institutional Dispensing 2, Sterile Preparation 2, and a Comprehensive Review and Integrated Practice prepare students to meet professional standards. The program integrates theory, laboratory work, and experiential learning to develop pharmacy technicians capable of managing inventory, preparing and dispensing medications, and assisting in pharmaceutical care. Graduates are prepared for certification and registration requirements, including the Pharmacy Examining Board of Canada exam and Ontario College of Pharmacists registration, ensuring they are ready to contribute effectively to the health care team in diverse pharmacy environments.
