COURSE CURRICULUM

Conestoga College’s Heavy Duty Equipment Technician program offers a comprehensive curriculum designed to prepare students for a successful career in the heavy equipment repair industry. In Level 1, foundational courses such as College Reading & Writing Across Contexts, Conestoga 101, Applied Mathematics, Introduction to Heavy Equipment Service and Repair, Drawings, Schematics and Basic Electricity, Trade and Repair Practices, and Welding for Motive Power lay the groundwork for technical proficiency and essential workplace skills. Level 2 builds on this foundation with courses including Motive Power Business, Fluid Power Systems, Fuel Systems I, Engine Systems I, Drive Train Systems, Brake Systems, and Electrical Systems I, which deepen students’ understanding of heavy duty equipment components and systems. In Level 3, students take advanced courses like Engine Systems for Heavy Duty Equipment, Motive Power Business II, Motive Power Shop Management, Trade Practices for Heavy Duty Equipment, Fuel Systems for Heavy Duty Equipment, Fluid Power for Heavy Duty Equipment, and Steering, Tires & Brake Systems for Heavy Duty Equipment, further developing both technical and management skills critical for industry success. Level 4 focuses on specialized and advanced topics including Drive Train Systems for Heavy Duty Equipment, Failure Analysis, Electrical Diagnostics and Repair, Legal Issues in Motive Power, Parts Management, and Fuels and Diagnostics, equipping students with expertise in troubleshooting, repair, and industry regulations. Throughout the program, students also complete elective courses to enhance their general education. This structured progression ensures graduates are well-prepared to enter the workforce or pursue further apprenticeship opportunities, with skills that align closely with industry demands and standards.
