COURSE CURRICULUM

Conestoga College’s Journalism program offers a comprehensive curriculum designed to develop skilled, versatile reporters ready for today’s evolving media landscape. In the first year, students build foundational skills in communication, presentation, media ethics, audio and video editing, social media, and digital marketing, while gaining proficiency with essential media tools and technology. The second year focuses on strengthening writing abilities and visual literacy, along with advanced media tools, storytelling techniques, web platforms, and creative content generation. As students advance to level three, courses emphasize freelancing and career development, advanced digital design, news development, and practical experience through a news lab and feature reporting, preparing students to handle real-world newsroom dynamics and diverse story formats. Safety in the workplace is also integrated into the curriculum to ensure professional readiness. The final year culminates in a field placement, providing hands-on industry experience, alongside advanced courses in long-form reporting, advanced news lab work, and story development, all designed to hone investigative and narrative skills. Throughout the program, students select electives to broaden their knowledge and skills. This well-rounded approach ensures graduates are equipped not only with the technical capabilities of digital and traditional journalism but also with the creative, ethical, and critical thinking skills necessary to produce trusted, impactful news content. By combining practical newsroom experiences with theoretical knowledge, the program prepares students for diverse careers in journalism, digital media, and communications.
