COURSE CURRICULUM

The Settlement Services Worker diploma program for September 2025 is structured across four levels, combining theoretical knowledge with practical experience to prepare students for roles supporting newcomers in Canada. In Level 1, foundational courses such as college reading and writing, Conestoga 101, group process and dynamics, introduction to professional practice, decolonizing social service work, and social service systems introduce students to key concepts in social services, equity, and community dynamics, while also developing essential academic and professional skills. Level 2 builds on this foundation with courses like safety in the workplace, techniques of interviewing and assessment, a field seminar to prepare for professional practice, transformative practices from theory to action, and community interventions, alongside a general education elective. These courses emphasize practical skills, critical thinking, and community engagement. In Level 3, students deepen their expertise with field placement I in community settlement services, newcomer legislation and innovative system approaches, introduction to services and systems for newcomer populations, trauma, resilience and beginning interventions, and supportive counseling with families, providing hands-on experience and specialized knowledge relevant to newcomer support. Level 4 focuses on professional obligations and ethical decision making, field placement II in community settlement services, theories of migration and systems integration, enhanced legislation approaches, and trauma-informed and anti-oppressive practice, preparing students for complex challenges in the field with a strong emphasis on ethics and social justice. Throughout the program, students gain practical skills through field placements and simulations while exploring the needs of diverse newcomer populations, equipping them to work effectively in community agencies, government organizations, schools, and hospitals. Electives at various levels allow students to broaden their education. This comprehensive approach ensures graduates are well-prepared to empower and support newcomers in their settlement journey with respect and cultural sensitivity.
